Khookha Mcqueer and art as a tool of resistance in the face of a patriarchal and male-dominated society that is stereotyped and normative and is covered in homophobia and transphobia.

Khookha Mcqueer: A Tunisian feminist, artist, and activist, she uses art and design as tools to combat discrimination and promote acceptance of diversity, focusing on issues of gender identity and sexual orientation. Her work highlights the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in conservative societies.

Khokha Maquir is the artistic voice of the LGBTQ+ community.

Khokha Makouir is not just an artist, but a symbol of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in Tunisia and the Arab world. Through her bold art and powerful messages in portraits, Khokha has broken barriers of silence and fear, making art a tool for resistance, expression, and redefining identities away from imposed normative stereotypes.

In societies that still criminalize difference, Khookha bodies in her work the stories of transgender people, gay men and lesbians, non-conformists, and all those who live on the margins of society because of their identity or orientation. Her struggle was not easy, but it was necessary. She faced threats and exclusion, yet she never stopped raising her voice, transforming pain into strength, and transforming fear into bold creative action.

Today, Khookha is one of the leading voices reshaping the landscape of human rights struggle through art, asserting that freedom begins with the ability to see ourselves clearly, and with the right to be who we are, without fear and without restrictions.

“Global queer norms should not be considered more valuable, proud, or visible than our local cultures,” says Khookha Mcqueer.

“For me, queer art is about visibility, about standing out, about resistance,” the queer activist says. “Art has the power to reach people’s emotions and speak louder than words.”
