On the Manipulation of Image and Discourse: Turning Humanitarian Issues into Security Obsessions

Trans Unity Coalition Tunisia expresses its strong condemnation of the recent media narratives alleging that educational materials are “encouraging atheism, deviance, and disobedience.” These claims are not only misleading they represent a deliberate and irresponsible distortion of reality aimed at manufacturing moral panic.

We hold media outlets and public figures accountable for amplifying unverified and inflammatory claims that contribute directly to stigmatization, hostility, and potential harm against marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals and those with diverse beliefs.

This narrative must be understood within its broader political context. At a time when Tunisia is witnessing increasing pressure on human rights organizations and a shrinking civic space, such discourse functions as a diversion tactic redirecting public attention away from pressing issues of governance, accountability, and fundamental freedoms.

The attempt to frame education on tolerance, diversity, and freedom of belief as “indoctrination” is intellectually dishonest and socially dangerous. It undermines the very foundations of education and promotes a climate of fear, exclusion, and division.

We categorically reject:

-The weaponization of moral rhetoric to justify discrimination.

-The use of LGBTQ+ communities as scapegoats in political and media discourse.

-The spread of misinformation that endangers individuals and distorts public debate.

We reaffirm that Human rights are universal and indivisible.Freedom of belief and identity is not negotiable.Dignity cannot be selectively applied.Protecting young people does not mean shielding them from diversity it means equipping them with the capacity to understand, respect, and coexist in a plural society. The Tunisia we advocate for is one rooted in justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity not one driven by fear-based narratives and exclusionary politics.Trans Unity Coalition Tunisia will continue to confront and expose any discourse that seeks to dehumanize, distract, or divide, and we call on all responsible actors to reject these tactics unequivocally.
